7. Institute for Humane Studies summer seminars
Hi all,
It's been claimed that we (yes, you and I, the econ students of McGill) are all festering piles of...well I won't say it; it'll offend your delicate ears. The post used to be at http://miltonrevolutionarypress.wordpress.com/ but it seems to have been removed now. I was going to say something along the lines of, "See our Facebook page (link above) for our incredibly witty response," but I suppose that's kind pointless now. Oh well. It was insightful while it lasted.
Anyway, points 1 and 2 are from us (and therefore you must read them), and 3-6 are outside opportunities.
1. Reminder: ESA First Annual Speaker Series presents David Doodge
We sometimes forget what great opportunities we have at McGill. If you didn't get the message, the guy who was governor of the Bank of Canada for most of your life is coming to speak at McGill, which, in case you were wondering, is REALLY cool. His speeh looks pretty interesting, and your ticket includes a free drink. For more details see http://www.mcgillesa.com/news-and-events/2012/2/1/esa-first-annual-speaker-series-presents-david-dodge.html and you should definitely RSVP at the Facebook event, http://www.facebook.com/events/315316118503758/
2. ESA clothing sale
As I announced last week, the ESA is having...another clothing sale! There will not be any more this year, so make sure to get your ESA merchandise now! We'll be tabling in the lobbies of Leacock and Bronfman on both Monday and Wednesday from 10 to 6 so you can come up to us and place your orders there and then, or else you can come to our office hours (which are at the top of this email). You can see the products (there's more than there was last semester!) in the attached catalogue ("Final Catalogue Winter 2012") and maybe you'd like to fill out the order form beforehand ("Order Form").
3. MJPS (McGill Journal of Political Science)
The McGill Journal of Political Science is accepting submissions. We're not mentioning this just because we love the PSSA (though of course we do), but because a lot of econ can have applications in political science. So if you wrote a paper that has polisci aspects or applications, then why not submit it to them? See the attached pdf, "MJPS Listerv-1", for the guidelines and requirements. They're also looking for a layout editor.
4. Sustainability Research Symposium
McGill is hosting its second annual Sustainability Research Symposium on March 8th. It will feature inspirational guest speakers, poster and three-minute presentation sessions showcasing graduate and undergraduate students’ research or class projects, and a "world-cafe" discussion open to all conference participants. What's relevant for you guys is that the work of one of the guest speakers, Dr Austin Troy, focuses on the economics of land use in and around cities, so if that interests you (or you're just interested in sustainability in general), see http://mcgillsustainabilitysymposium.wordpress.com/ or the attached poster ("Sustainability Research Symposium).
5. AIESEC
AIESEC is an the world's largest student-run organisation. They can help you find an economics or development internships; see the attached poster ("AIESEC").
6. OECD student ambassador
This is a year-long role for the 2012-2013 school year at McGill where you will be responsible for raising the profile of the OECD on campus. See the attached pdfs for the guidelines and the current class. For more information, contact Elodie Turchi (elodie.turchi@oecd.org).
7. Institute for Humane Studies summer seminars
The IHS at George Mason University is organising seminars over the summer, some of which are econ-related. See their blurb:
This summer, the Institute for Humane Studies will host twelve seminars for students and recent graduates from around the globe. Each weeklong seminar will facilitate discussion, collaboration, and in–depth thinking about laws of economics, the proper role of government in a free society, and the ethics of capitalism. Participants will apply these ideas to essential questions of our day such as, "How can society solve widespread problems while respecting individual liberty?" In addition to exploring specific topics like the relationship between incentives and institutions, students will broaden their political, economic, historical, and philosophical perspectives—and discover new possibilities for their own futures.
Apply at www.TheIHS.org . Apply by March 15 to receive a free book. Application deadline: March 31.
...and that's it! (Phew, that was a long listserv.) Have a nice weekend, y'all! (No, seriously, I order you to have a nice weekend. Having a bad weekend is NOT acceptable behaviour and will not be tolerated.)
